I was never too big a fan of De Palma's modernization/remake of Scarface, but it was definitely better than the original one. Hawks's original is shorter than De Palma's, but also less exciting and less interesting. It was made for the sole purpose of serving as an anti-gangster message, and the propaganda shows. The characters all feel cheap, flat, and laughable; there is no complexity because the creators didn't want any. Unrelated scenes are included to enforce their ideology. Everything feels staged, written, planned; none of it is real.
